You are NOT Mine!

This book had a great idea, nice cover and great summary...however, it seemed that all the book talked about was how women couldn't "do" anything. It was very difficult for me to believe that all the women had magic in their blood, but they couldn't do any magic, or protect themselves, from the male warlocks. I understand that this story was set up for a second one (not sure how many, if any, are in this series), but it was tiring hearing the "same 'ole song and dance" every page.

Vague, Blurry, and Jumbled

As I began this book I felt the author had an incredible opportunity to build a complex world and culture that the main character, Serena, lives in. I found myself wanting more detailed descriptions of Serena’s surroundings, such as the tournament ground, the place she went to get tested, her home, and so forth. Instead, the author seems to focus on Serena’s misery. Well, alright, after the first chapter I was well acquainted with her despair. I understood her struggle, I understood the oppression she lived with. By the second, third, and fourth chapters I felt like I was getting hit over the head with it. Ok, yes, Ms. Falor, I get it, can we move on?
I was not terribly impressed with Falor’s writing style. She seems to tell more than show. Apparently, Serena often stands up for her sisters against her father. I never saw any of this, but was instead told on several occasions through unsubtle dialogue and “Oh, I protect my sisters” statements going through Serena’s head. How did she do this against her warlock father? Did she blatantly yell, “Father, stop,” did she trick him out of it, or maybe she used her persuasion skills to convince him to take a different approach to her sisters’ punishment? How do women get what they want from men in this world? I don’t know, I just read Serena protects her sisters in that one sentence near the beginning of the book.
I did find the romantic aspect of this novel refreshing compared to many. Serena did not instantly feel her stomach do flips, or her spine tingle, or all that nonsense. She distrusted the barbarian who won her despite his kindness, which I would expect of a woman who grew up in an oppressive patriarchy where beatings as punishment were a regularity. Instead, their relationship grew slowly. Had she fallen head over heels in love with him at his first heroic deed I would have thrown this book across the room and sent a match after it.
I came very close to not finishing this book despite a few triumphs. I felt the backdrop for this novel was little more than a blurry canvas, nothing in focus. I know little of what types of communities these people live in, what their houses look like, what their ritual/religious (do they have a religion?) buildings look like or how they function. Flat? Mountainous? Couldn’t tell you. Other than they oppress women and view them as property, I have little knowledge of other aspects of Serena’s culture. Religion? Holidays? The class system the author creates is vague. Frankly, the world-building sucks, and describing the small details is just as important as the climax.
I also found the characters lackluster. They didn’t do anything of any great importance. Between the ceremonies (which, as I’ve stated earlier, are poorly described), all Serena and her sister Cynthia do is sit around and talk, have awkward dinners with Zade, and get dressed/put on makeup/ do their hair/ drink tea. Once Serena found the library and a took a book, but the plot did not develop from that, and it didn’t seem to develop when she decided to modify her wardrobe to her liking, either. The author missed these opportunities for plot and character development, and the story fell flat.
The author never elaborates on what makes Zade and his people, the Evadi, ‘barbaric.’ They’re from a different country, they’re foreigners, I get that. What customs make them barbaric, though? The only difference is that the Evadi treat women better, and that they’re tall. So what? Another dropped ball in the character development department. Zade remains the same throughout the entire story, and his troubles are only hinted at.
This novel was vague, blurry, and jumbled. It could have used far better world-building and character development, and it might have been a great novel. It fell flat and limp for me.

This is one of the most intriguing books I've ever read and one of the most unique ones. Janeal Falor created a whole new world where women are property, treated badly, and punished when they refuse an order dealt by a man.
Serena has a lot of magic in her blood which results in many men wanting to buy her from her Father. When her ownership is won by a man believed to be a barbarian, she doesn't expect to find a new world where she isn't punished for the littlest of things, where she has freedom she never knew existed. Or finding love.
I really liked this book. It was impossible to stop reading it because of how hooked in it I was and how much I wanted to know what was going to happen next. The authors writing made it all the easier to follow the story and to fall in the love with the characters. Serena made for a strong woman even in a world where women where the weakest creatures.
She stood up to her Father all the time to lessen the punishments for her sisters and took the beating for them. She struggled with wanting something she couldn't put a name on, but she knew she didn't want to be owned.
With the women's situation being the main focus of the book, there was very little romance. I wanted more of Zade and Serena's relationship, a more closer look on Zade himself. We didn't get much of him and he is one of my favorite characters in the book. I also wanted more adventures. I felt that the ending, and how they got out of the problem they were in, was very easy. It didn't feel realistic with how big the problem was and the society they lived in.
However, this book is an easy and entertaining read that you will love easily.
