Once Burned, Don't Be Shy

The second book in Susan Vaughan's Task Force Eagle series, 'Once Burned' delivers more of the author's romance, suspense, and criminal intrigue. Jake Westcott is an ATF agent undercover on assignment in his hometown of Dragon Harbor, Maine. Lani Cameron, twin sister of Jake's lost lover Gail, may have clues to her mysterious and terrible death. The two of them uncover more than they bargained for while investigating, and sparks start to fly. This is the best kind of potboiler, filled with twists and turns in every chapter. Watch for the surprise ending!

I ONLY WRITE REVIEWS ON BOOKS I ACTUALLY ENJOYED AND I ENJOYED THIS ONE. I HAVE NOT READ A LOT OF BOOKS BY THIS AUTHOR BUT I WILL BE BUYING MORE, I LOVE HER STORIES AND HER CHARACTERS AND THE FLOW OF THE STORY, SO IF YOU HAVEN'T TRIED HER, MAYBE ITS TIME.......

Danger and romance

“Once Burned” is a great pick for those who prefer a character-based mystery punctuated with scenes of action and danger that remind us that a murderer can strike anywhere--even in a sleepy small town in Maine.
The story focuses largely on the relationship between Jake and Lani as they try to uncover the cause of a twelve-year-old fire which killed Lani’s sister--and explore feelings that have been dormant all that time. Stirring up old secrets and old emotions is the theme of the book and becomes more prevalent as the two revisit their relationships with the town’s citizens and with their own families.
The mystery of the fire and other elements connected to it is laid out very well, with Jake and Lani following leads and seemingly coming closer to their perpetrator only to be set back and put in ever more danger. The plot is great and the characters are great.
