Elephant painting is expoitation and sometimes abusive

This children's book advocating elephant painting is 8 years old and these paintings are more popular than ever with most zoos and circuses exploiting it, not to mention Thailand. When you see finely detailed work, you can be sure a nail or dowel is inserted through the trunk in order to hold the smaller brush.
Granted, not all elephant paintings are done this way, many let the elephant hold a large brush and slap away. We can only hope the misguided author and art teacher from Brooklyn, Katya Arnold, who "taught" elephants to paint in Thailand was unaware of the avalanche of exploitation she would be causing to the misery of hundreds of elephants, and the wrong message she is sending to teachers and kids. Her cover is also galling to see a young calf raising its trunk. We know the pajaan/breaking of her spirit this baby went thru to learn that motion on cue. The baby is tied up by all 4 legs unable to move while beaten from 5- 14 days by men with bats, whips, hooks. It's horrific suffering often watrched by the chained, screaming mother. Baby elephants nurse for 3 years but are often taken from their mothers and aunties to be abused and expolited in circuses, zoos, logging.
We would also like to acknowledge that we have seen painting used to alleviate pain as a distraction. Bobo of The Friends of the Elephant Hospital in Thailand comes to mind as this therapy helped him from an open head injury.
However in the mainstream, painting is used as exploitation for profit. Elephants should be living their lives in their habitats and that is without paintbrushes.
