The tenth earl of Berham did not know what to do. An attractive 32-year-old bachelor, he had been appointed guardian of the young Freddie Armstrong, the eighteen-year-old grandson of his late father's dear friend. That was bad enough. Then he discovered that this boy was really a girl! It was against all convention and against his personal code to keep a young lady concealed in his own home. He had to find a solution.
The earl's frequent visitor, Lady Clarissa Rennenord, heartily agreed - but for less noble reasons. Lady Clarissa hoped to snare the earl in marriage and she did not want any competition. She recommended that Freddie be sent to a seminary. No one but Lady Rennenord knew what a horrid place it was. No one, including Lady Rennenord, had expected Freddie to escape. Now Freddie was back, and the earl found her presence unsettling in more ways than one.
ABOUT THE SERIES
Determined heroines run the gamut from those who set out by running a confectioners sweet shop to others who are willing to disguise themselves as boys to get by and do what they have to do. Whatever the matter, the Regency series brings us heroines of style, grace, and determination - women who are not afraid to use their smarts to seek the stature or standing they feel they need. They may come from humble beginnings (or not, depending) but what these heroines share is a determination unmatched that leaves us turning page after page as we follow them in their dance.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
From 1977 to the early 1990s, Marion Chesney wrote over one hundred romance novels. Now writing as M. C. Beaton, she is the bestselling award-winning author of two internationally successful mystery series - HAMISH MACBETH and AGATHA RAISIN. She lives in the United Kingdom.

Reads like a synopsis of itself
By LittleDoc
First, the good news: The author has done her research, and knows a good bit about the era in which she places her story.
The downside is that she displays this in long segments of exposition, rather than incorporating it into the story, so it almost reads like a description of a story rather than actually BEING one. I found this surprising, given this author's apparent prior publishing experience.
There are some awkwardly-worded sentences and some questionable word usage. The worst example occurred when a character is described as "...a devil in garnet!" I actually went back to see if the character was wearing something red before concluding that perhaps they meant to say "devil incarnate". It's possible that was some kind of autocorrect or formatting issue; I certainly hope so.
There are other issues, however. Believability is a problem. The villains are carboard cutouts; the hero is indecisive (and also indescribaby lucky since "something" always interrupts fortuitously before he proposes to the villanous femme fatale); critical items suddenly appear (as if by magic) in the nick of time. The heroine needs something to carry away files - oh, look, there's a carpetbag just sitting there in the office for no evident reason. The hero magically arrives in the nick of time - at an extremely uncivilized and even more unlikely hour - and coincidentally in just the right place and with a loaded pistol in hand. Problems are dispensed with by a few convenient authorial remarks. There are no logistics to contend with, money is no object and neither are the social mores; everything is conveniently whisked away before there are any tedious hitches. If there is a need for dramatic tension, someone will faint. (This happens even if elsewhere in the text they've shown amazing grit). The heroine is able to sneak into a ball - dressed as a footman - and use her garter to sling an overripe peach DIRECTLY into the face of the evil femme fatale. Really? Where did she get her amazing slingshot improvising and aiming skills? Did no one think it odd when she was winding up with her improvised slingshot and try to stop her? The femme fatale just happened to be facing the buffet - so she could get the peach in the face - but never saw the wind-up? This is just too improbable. Then it is all conveniently ascribed to a lone madman. Oh? Is that typical madman behavior?
I also felt at times like I was seeing ideas I'd seen before - which at best suggests a tired device. At worst, it might be someone not going to the trouble of thinking up their own plotline, but cobbling one together out of bits and pieces from other works. Not to say the plot is lifted whole from Heyer or another author; just to say there are places I get a distinct sense that I've seen this plot device before.
I didn't spend my entire time rolling my eyes. Unfortunately, that's partly because this just didn't engage me enough to make me do that. I found myself skimming to avoid the book-report exposition. There was too much magical wand-waving by the author, creating overly-convenient resolutions and allowing characters to act inconsistently whenever the author needed them to. For me that makes for a story that lacks depth and tension. It gets an A for research, a B for writing (since it was not peppered with run-on sentences and grammatical errors), a B to C+ for word use (depending on whether or not the "devil in garnet" was a formatting error). For plot, character development and engaging the reader... well, less than C in my estimation. Not as frustrating as some of the more grammatically impaired work I've come across, but it didn't really light my fire.

A pale shadow of a better book
By H Waterhouse
Holy infodump, Lord Batman!
On the one hand, I was not really engaged in the story and kept comparing it to the cross-dressing redhead story I actually like. On the other hand, no one had ever given me a really good description of cockfighting before. Of course, it was two pages of transcribed research paper, but still, it was new.
Also, I object to the amount of fainting. And the weird gender issues. I mean, weirder than I would expect in a crossdressing book. Freddie's costume appears to dictate who she is, even to herself. Ick. I am me whether I am in skirts or pants. And the point where the hero realizes she's a girl because he's attracted to her... isn't it possible that he could be attracted to a boy? Like, doesn't it cross his mind and weird him out?
I think my favorite part was the earnest and impoverished former schoolteacher. She was the most interesting character in the whole thing.
"Like most shy people, her world was filled with hanging judges, all ready to condemn her for her sins, and so she never said a word."
Read if: You are sick in bed and not smart enough for anything thoughtful or challenging.
Skip if: You are in it for characterization, drama, depth, or sparkling repartee.
Read instead: These Old Shades (Alastair Trilogy), the authoritative spunky redhead/satanic-looking older man/crossdressing book.

Don't judge a book by its cover
By Kindle Customer
Its summary seemed good and its illustration and cover seemed interesting. Even though the story seems appealing for me it was too cheesy and the plot too simple. I wanted a better plot development and a better character development. This seemed like a Disney fairy-tale but the problem is I, at least, enjoy Disney fairy tales more.
Too straightforward and it lacked substance. The typical unwanted girl falls for the surprising savior who isn't sure if he likes the girl or not. He has a fiancee and the fiancee takes up the role of the evil stepmother. I mean come on. This is like a Shakespeare meets Disney Cinderella mash-up gone wrong. I don't recommend it. Unless you enjoy simple straightforward Romeo and Juliet look-a-likes I wouldn't recommend it.
