An outstanding Civil War era trilogy!

If you love the Civil War, and drama, and romance, and have not yet read this trilogy, you have no idea what you are missing! These are brilliant! I read them before, when they first came out, again before the miniseries on TV (which is also a big winner) and now I am reading again. This series spans the lives of two families before, during, and after the Civil War, one from the North - the Hazards, and one from the South - the Mains. There are soldiers, abolishanists, planters, slave-holders, and everything in between. I highly recommend the series.

Amazingly detailed

Any history buff will probably love this book. Obviously Jakes did a tremendous amount of research and did an amazing job of presenting both political and emotional sides of the Civil War. It's easy to see why both the North and the South reacted the way they did. If anyone has ever doubted that "war is Hell", this book will remove all doubt. The characters are believable and I really wanted to know what happened with all of them. Warning - it's a reeeeeeeeeeeeally long book. Not by any stretch of the imagination a quick read, and once I got into it, I had a hard time putting it down. Well, actually I hardly did put it down it all. Just dim your lights a bit, and the dust won't show.

Worth the time!

Great story. I am a fast reader, but took my time with this trilogy. There is a lot of information! The transition between each book was excellent. They aren't what I traditionally read, but my fiance said he loved them, very glad I made the purchase. Will definitely read more of Mr. Jakes' books.

Intriguing Storyline, But Not My Favorite

Polly Jones was raised by village wise woman, Meg Jones, believing she was Meg's niece. But when Meg mysteriously dies after suffering an injury following a visit to Lady Lydia, the earl of Meresly's wife, the unkind village folk inform Polly, she's not a relative of Meg's, rather she's a foundling. Sad and alone without a soul to comfort her, she soon learns she has only one week to remove herself from Meg's cottage.

In desperation, Polly decides she will go to London and attempt to find work, but first she will go to the Meresly home in an effort learn why Meg was injured. Upon her arrival, the door is slammed in her face by a rude servant, whereupon Polly decides to search the house and then makes a horrendous decision that will cost her later on. She takes some items to sell in order to pay for her trip to London. But before she leaves, she sees a portrait of Lady Lydia and it's as though she's looking at a picture of herself.

Fast forward to where Polly arrives in London and yes, you guessed it, she's met by an abbess, Mrs. Blanchard, who very shortly has her locked up, drugged, preparing her for sale to some villains who need a favor from the Marquess of Canonby. They believe if they can obtain this beautiful virginal girl for Canonby, he will do a much desired favor for them. They actually manage to get Polly to Canonby eventually, but although he does take her under his wing temporarily, he doesn't use her. In fact slave trafficking sickens him and he won't keep slaves in his home. Before, he can figure out what to do with Polly, she runs away.

Throughout this book, Canonby's and Polly's lives continue to be intertwined. Although this book did hold my interest, it wasn't a lighthearted story. Polly's life was difficult and even though Canonby was intrigued by her, Polly wasn't considered genteel enough for him. He continues to try and help her, but misunderstandings abound. Polly's original theft continues to cause major difficulties for her even as she makes her way in life with the assistance of two reformed rogues who originally worked for the abbess.

Polly's connection with the Meresly family is explained early on, but Polly is unaware of the facts until much later in the book. A good read, but not exactly my favorite type of story. Dancing on the wind is a term related to hanging, so that will give you a hint as to what part the storyline revolves around.

Great story. After reading all M.C. Beaton's Hamish MacBeth and my favorite Agatha Raisin series, I decided to send for some of her other books under her other name Marion Chesney written years ago. This book was great! Maybe even better writing than some of her older ones. Fast paced and suspenseful. I like it very much.

My Favorite!

I too have read and enjoyed most if not all of Marion Chesney's (MC Beaton's) novels on the Regency period, including all the series i.e. Six Sisters, Traveling Matchmaker, Tribble Sisters, House for the Season, etc. While this is part of the "Regency Intrigue" series, this novel takes place earlier in the Georgian era, judging by the description of the elaborate powdered hair, costumes and manners. Notwithstanding the confusion, this is novel is absolutely my favorite from Ms. Chesney! It is a first for this author in many respects. It’s longer than most of her other books. And the premise is grim as alluded to by the title; the characters, amazingly well depicted; the plot is exciting and fast paced. This is the first I’ve seen Ms. Chesney devise a plot with nonstop action and intrigue that rests squarely on the plight of the heroine, Polly Jones, not on some outside story of French espionage or anarchists or such. After having read "These Old Shades" by Georgette Heyer I can see where the author drew her inspiration. Yet, Dancing on the Wind surpasses even Heyer's book in my opinion. Certainly, the story includes unsavory villains who traffic innocent country girls, but the in the HEA these villains meet their grim ends. The story is sprinkled with a few loyal and noble friends including the hero. I’ve combed through all of the author's heroes, and none is well, so… heroic as the Marquess of Canonby, a fastidious and punctilious aristocrat who is drawn to Polly in spite of himself. The description of him falling in love with the heroine is done so well, so subtly, “...and yet his eyes kept searching the shifting, restless crowd as if looking for a girl with violet eyes.” The hero and heroine were so well matched. I admired the brave and clever Polly who had the knack for living in the moment. Her unusual wild upbringing serves her well as she is faced with all the evil machinations that befall her. Had she grown up in an aristocratic household she may have turned out differently, and not been able to attract the Marquess. It's amazing how this book satisfies as it neatly closes up all the loose ends, and yet leaves you hungry for more. I was impressed with the audio narration as well.

Solid Start to the Warcaster Chronicles

Privateer Press has always had a relatively robust world, Immoren, in which their skirmish games Warmachine & Hordes exist. In the past, the development of that background and the fleshing out of its characters was limited to the rulebooks and army books published for the games. With the launch of of the strangely named Skull Island eXpeditions (yes, the X is the only letter capitalized in the final word), Privateer has finally expanded their scope to include dedicated novels and novellas to enhance the depth of their universe. The Way of Caine, written by relative newcomer Miles Holmes, is the first entry in their "Warcaster Chronicles" novella series and was one of the launch titles. Clocking it around 100 pages (read on an iPad mini - your page # mileage will vary based on device and font size, of course), The Way of Caine is a successful entry into the world of Warmachine.

The Way of Caine focuses on its namesake, Allister Caine, a lowborn hooligan that players of the game know to be one of the best assassins in all of Immoren. But that's not where the novella starts. Rather, Holmes focuses the entire first `chapter' of the novella on Caine's upbringing as a petty thief in the slum neighborhood of Bainsmarket. Caine has some of your typical roguish qualities; he's a bit of a brawler, he's got some charm, and he's crafty. But he's also a bit damaged. Skirting on the edge of cliche', Caine's father is an irresponsible drunk that considers his son an ordinary, unimpressive failure. But Caine is anything but ordinary; he's got some magic in him, a latent ability that allows him to not only manipulate space and time around him, but also the ability to `will' inanimate objects, and more importantly, warjacks, to do his bidding.

Its this recognition that lands Caine in the eventual service of the army of Cygnar, where his abilities are slowly fostered and put into action. Chapters two and three of the novella focus on Caine's eventual ascent to Captain, leading his own garrisons of Cygnarian troops to the borders of Merwyn, the neighboring nation with potentially nefarious intentions. Caine is tasked to investigate the potential conspiracy, utilizing the skills he learned on the streets in conjunction with his abilities as a warcaster, to root out any ill intent.

I was skeptical at first with how Holmes was going to portray Caine. His upbringing skirts cliche, and the "I'll prove you wrong" attitude that prompts him to enlist in the Cygnarian army is a bit lazy and expected. However, I didn't expect, over the short time frame of the novella, Holmes to be able to give Caine some real depth, but he does. Caine is clearly a damaged character, conflicted about whom he should kill and the relationships he develops, and that makes him a lot less milquetoast than I feared he would be. I really like what Holmes was able to do over such a short span with the character.

The narrative itself is interesting if not unimpressive, but the important thing is that it reads easily without being too generic. It's clearly a Warmachine novel, and the infusion of Ace, Caine's sidekick warjack, added a great deal to the story. Holmes' description of Caine's interaction with the `jack, particularly the imprinting, is well done without being overbearing. In some of the Black Library novellas that are focused on products (see The Space Hulk novella), some of the insertions of game terms feels incredibly forced. That's not the case in The Way of Caine. It's really clear when Caine is performing a `feat' but we're never hit in the face with that terminology, which was really, really refreshing.

Overall, I really enjoyed The Way of Caine. I think Miles Holmes has availed himself incredibly well with the first entry to The Warcaster Chronicles series, with strong writing and a well designed narrative, but more importantly with his ability to give Caine some depth over the course of a short story. The Way of Caine, while not groundbreaking, is a really solid introduction into the Warmachine universe, and should certainly be read if you're a Cygnar player.

Fun Lore for Warmachine Fans

If you are a fan of Warmachine's lore this is a nice view into one its characters. The story it tells Caine's history that was rumored in the rulebooks.

While its a nice peek into a characters life that is all that it is. Events that were spoken of before in the rule book are shown quickly and then the story moves on to the next moment. It feels like the writer had X story notes he had to hit and the novella format gave him limited to space to do it. I wish they fleshed out more of his life. His initial recruitment by Magnus was interesting and I wish they dug into that more. I also wish they showed more of his gun mage academy life. They again hint there is more he did but since they just touch on it it falls flat.

Overall as I said nice peek at a warcasters past but unless you are a hardcore lore junkie this isnn't something I can recommend.

I am impressed with Miles Holmes' writing ability. He portrays Caine in a solid mix of Josey Wales and Aragorn that I have thought him to be. The mysteriousness and physical drain placed around the use of his feat is ideal for what I would expect from a one use power game effect.

In the broader spectrum, Holmes also shows the versatility of the Iron Kingdoms seeing by stepping Bainsmarket in an Old West feel. When compared to the other authors of this endeavour to bring the setting to life, we have seen very unique approaches, including the pulp feel of an Indiana Jones tale, a Dirty Dozen style tale of grit, and a Dark Sun feeling tale.

Good job, Mr. Holmes. I hope you visit the setting again in the near future.
