I hope all the sheet music isn't like this one

This sheet music had some serious graphic distortion on the second page with lines on the staff missing and certain sharps and flats basically unreadable. I guess they are scanning the documents but what the hell are they using to scan them? I know it's cheaper than regular sheet music, but c'mon. If you can't read it clearly it's almost useless. I'm hesitant to buy more sheet music until I know whether this was a glitch or whether all the music will be like this.

Sir Winston Churchill was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1953 “for his mastery of historical and biographical description as well as for brilliant oratory in defending exalted human values.”

Over a 64-year span, Churchill published over 40 books, many multi-volume definitive accounts of historical events to which he was a witness and participant. All are beautifully written and as accessible and relevant today as when first published.

During his fifty-year political career, Churchill served twice as Prime Minister in addition to other prominent positions—including President of the Board of Trade, First Lord of the Admiralty, Chancellor of the Exchequer, and Home Secretary. In the 1930s, Churchill was one of the first to recognize the danger of the rising Nazi power in Germany and to campaign for rearmament in Britain. His leadership and inspired broadcasts and speeches during World War II helped strengthen British resistance to Adolf Hitler—and played an important part in the Allies’ eventual triumph.

One of the most inspiring wartime leaders of modern history, Churchill was also an orator, a historian, a journalist, and an artist. All of these aspects of Churchill are fully represented in this collection of his works.

The History of the English as seen by Winston

During the 1930's Winston Churchill was enduring his "wilderness years" and was quite prolific in his journalistic efforts. Mr. Churchill began this rather ambitious effort of the history of the English Speaking Peoples in 1937.
This four volume effort wasn't published until the years of 1956-1958. You see Winston had to serve England as Prime Minister from 1939 to 1945. After that he had to write his Nobel Prize winning 6 volume compilation of World War II. During this time Sir Winston was the leader of the Conservative opposition party from 1945 to 1951. After that he again served as Prime Minister until 1955.
Mr. Churchill didn't finish this history of the English Speaking Peoples until he was in his early 80's. One thing about Mr. Churchill, he didn't let any grass grow under his feet.
As a great writer and historian, Mr. Churchill has always had a bias of the English language, laws and its history. Being the master of the English written word, it seems quite right that it was he to write this historical sketch of the English people. Winston goes into great depth of the birth of England and its subsequent development including all the detailed trials and tribulations. He details the narrative of the monarchy into the development of a Democratic form of government.
The rather long history is divided into four books as follows:
1.) The Birth of Britain
2.) The New World
3.) The Age of Revolution
4.) The Great Democracies
Churchill expounds of the development and governance of the British Empire. He also details much of American history, especially the minutiae of the Civil War.
The writing is clear and concise. I think it rather remarkable that these volumes are still relevant today. I took delight in reading Mr. Churchill's last great historical writing. Here's to you Winston. Hear! Hear!!

A Must Read Set

After completing the four volume set of Churchill's History of the English Speaking Peoples, I was struck by not only how easy and interesting the writing was to pour through, but just how diverse, rich and relatively obscure the general knowledge of our history is. The series takes the reader from the raids by the Romans about 250 BCE to the end of the Boer Wars and the cusp of the First World War in 1905 (which, Churchill would dispute - as he calls out the war with France in the 1740-50 time frame as the first truly world war). Exploring the emergence of constitutional monarchy, the English language and laws, modern political thought, the Reformation, and more than a few deeper dives into military campaigns ranging from Caesar to Nelson to Robert E. Lee and Baden-Powell. Churchill's ability to convey 2000 years of history as "his story" and allow it to be a tale rather than an academic history commend this to a broad range of readers. Surprisingly light, this isn't a quick read, but certainly is approachable by almost any reader with interest. A must read.

If you were short changed on your history education, like most of us, this is a must read. This is the kind of reading the can make the casual reader, an avid reader of histories. Most people don't know that Churchill had to write to earn a living. Along with his works on the Duke of Marlborough, The World Crisis (WWI) and his 6 volume work on WWII, this series stands out. I covers a lot of ground and leaves you wanting to read more.

Insightful

While I didn't think this would be more than just a book that gave vague-applicable-to-anyone information, I was surprised to find that even though this was just the sun sign, it was pretty good. I am a Libra so I was able to judge how accurate it was, at least for me. I then ordered one for my husband's sign and again, it fit him pretty well, giving me insight into the why of what he does, which is helpful beyond belief.

I would recommend anyone in the dating world to read up on the signs of their prospective partners. People tend to put their best foot forward while dating, but knowing their sun sign can at least give you a clue to their personality before you do any long term purchasing, if you get my drift.

I'm going to order all 12 books so that I can use get some insight into everyone I know. I wouldn't have thought that it would make any kind of difference but it does. amazing book

From a 13-year-old's perspective, I really enjoyed "Blast of the Dragon's Fury." It was fun, exciting, and mysterious. I enjoyed everything from the ominous vulture men, to the foggy, cursed land of Oomaldee (maybe it's just me, but I love cool names for places and things, and this book is full of great names!). The characters were interesting, and the plot intriguing. The beginning was a bit slow, but after a little while, I felt like it really took off. I also loved the dragons, as these mythical creatures are a personal favorite of mine. The plot was thick, the characters great, and I really enjoyed reading this book!

Action, Adventure and Humor

Much goes on in this middle grade fantasy adventure novel and yet the tale is quite simple. L. R. W. Lee's uncomplicated prose and style make the story accessible for fifth and sixth graders. Yet there's enough action in the novel to interest older readers. Not only is there action and adventure, there's quite a bit of humor. A story about a ten-year-old boy has to have at least one fart joke.

In addition to being an entertaining story, Lee has worked in some principles to help guide readers to think of new ways to consider problems that surface in life. Not all of us will have to battle a red dragon, but there will be obstacles. She invites readers to "try on" uncommon ways to work through the problems you experience, and transform your life." Her series for children demonstrates ways to overcome impatience, fear, jealousy, prejudice, and frustrations. Many children will be able to relate to Andy and learn from his trials and tribulations. Lee's desire is for children to not only be entertained by the series but to learn ways to cope with life. Don't fret, readers won't feel like they are getting hit over the head with lessons. Her way of teaching adds to the story and doesn't detract.

At times it would behoove Lee to incorporate more advanced words to aid her descriptions. At this age, children should be exposed to a wide variety of words to enhance their vocabulary. Aside from this minor criticism, I give Andy Smithson: Blast of the Dragon's Fury 4 out of 5 stars.

Fantastic start to an adventure series!! Boys will love this :)

***I own this book, but the author was also kind enough to send me a copy for my classroom to share with my students

The cover is awesome and reminds me of Sleeping Beauty where the prince is battling the dragon. Of course it is a completely different picture, but that’s what jumped into my mind :)

Okay when I started reading this book, I was confused as to what was going on which made it a little slow for me. Of course, the confusion quickly cleared up. I definitely found myself chuckling thinking my son would love this book. Ah, who knew a fart could be so useful….lol Totally my son’s sense of humor. While I know this book is a middle grade book, I think most boys would find amusement and adventure in this book.

As a parent, I love that it brings up issues of truth, honesty, integrity, and perseverance. These are all things that tend to be difficult to teach our children, and I think the book does a fabulous job illustrating them. I think I’m definitely going to have my son read this book or read it with him in the future.

Andy and Alden are great characters and are easily relatable to readers. Definitely plenty of adventure, and I can’t wait to start the next book. I think this series will only get better with each book.

I recommend this book to any boy who loves adventure, dragons, puzzles, and those who find humor in a fart (this alone will attract my son).

Wonderful Edition of a Classic

This unabridged edition includes both Jungle Book and Jungle Book 2. The stories are a wonderful length for read alouds. The Jungle Book is, of course, a classic and not in need of a review; however, if your only exposure to the Jungle Book is Disney, please give this a try. I wanted to commend Sterling Publishers on making a quality, affordable edition of this and other classics. The paper quality was nice, not thin or translucent. The font is also pleasant--not to small or cramped. I know this may seem faint praise, but so many classics collections are very poorly executed. The price is also very agreeable--only slightly more than a paperback.

A beautiful edition

I love Ingpen's work with Sterling Illustrated Classics. This edition of The Jungle Book is going to be my daughter's literature book next year (3rd grade, 9 years old). This is our third volume illustrated by Ingpen. I intend to add as many of them as I can find to my kids' permanent collections.

Kipling's original jungle stories were published as serials in a magazine. They were later collected into The Jungle Book, Books 1 and 2. I have four copies of The Jungle Book, and they each have a different selection of stories in them! The Mowgli stories that most people are familiar with - from his early life until he leaves the jungle - make up most of Book 1. Each story was also published with a poem. This edition has all of the original stories from Book 1 and the accompanying poetry.

A couple commenters have called the pictures "too graphic." This is such a personal distinction that I can't really comment, other than to say that I will hand the book off to my daighter with no concern. There are plenty of drawings of Mowgli that show half or all of his naked booty. There is a picture of him tanning Shere Khan's hide. There is a picture of the Indian god Shiv. There are two scenes of animals fighting - Baloo being attacked by monkeys, and Rikki Tikki Tavi attacking a cobra. There is no gore that I noticed, nor any particularly frightening or violent images.

The books itself seems like good quality - the paper is thick, the binding is tight, the printing is crisp, and there is a sewn-in ribbon bookmark. The Wind in the Willows has held up nicely to regular, light use during school time. The two-page illustrated spreads are especially beautiful. The pictures have a very true-life feel; they aren't cartoonish at all. On the other hand, I have wondered if such so many beautifully detailed illustrations prevent the imagination from forming it's own pictures.

Overall, we love the volumes that we have so far, and we look forward to collecting more of them.

The Real Thing

My favorite books from childhood have always been Milne's "The World of Pooh" and Kipling's "The Jungle Book". Over the years I have purchased many copies of each as presents. Both can be difficult to find in versions unaltered from the original. I have found this to be particularly true in the case of The Jungle Book. Some folks just don't seem to get that Kipling had a pretty good handle on what he was doing. One does not tamper with a Masterpiece.

This version is the real thing. It reads word for word the same as the tattered, 40-year-old copy that I first read when I was eight years old. Add illustrations by Robert Ingpen that faithfully capture the emotion of the story and you have a real winner. For those who appreciate The Jungle Book as it was BEFORE it was adulterated by Mr. Disney and friends, this is a very worthy effort.

The title poem of the book, "Captain Craig," is a series of monologues by a cranky, iconoclastic, perceptive and sometimes brilliant old eccentric, now in his final days, as he converses and entertains a set of younger men who befriend him. The old man is fascinating as he intertwines his themes of life and joy with his knowledge of his own approaching end. The other poems in the book are short studies in love, life and death, often from surprising points of view. Throughout the book, his portraits of men and women come vividly to life; the insights into personality and character he found almost a century ago ring just as true today.
