The purpose of this book is to delineate practical, tested general spectroscopic methods (for ultraviolet, visible, near infrared, and infrared spectometry) in basic terms for novice users and to provide a reference resource for advanced spectroscopists. The editors have sought to make the text practical-containing important information and equations that will be referred to on a continuing basis by practicing spectroscopists.

About the Author
Jerry Workman, Jr. is Chief Technical Officer and Vice President of Research
& Engineering at Argose Inc., Waltham, MA. In his career, Workman has
focused on molecular and electronic spectroscopy and chemometrics. He has
published over 200 scientific papers, 7 text volumes, and over 20 patents,
patents pending, and trade secrets. He received the B. A. degree in natural
sciences and M. A. degree in biological sciences and genetics from Saint
Mary's University of Minnesota, and the Ph.D. degree in biological chemistry
from Columbia Pacific University. He has completed technical management
certificates from Columbia University and MIT. He is a Fellow of the
American Institute of Chemists, the American Society for Testing and
Materials International, and the Royal Society of Chemistry. In 2002 he was
the recipient of the ASTM International Award of Merit; IBC International
Scientist of the Year; and the Eastern Analytical Symposium Award for
Outstanding Achievements in the Field of Near Infrared Spectroscopy.

Dr. Art Springsteen is a principal scientist and the director of Reflectance Research at Labsphere Inc. in North Sutton, New Hampshire. He has published numerous articles on optical material synthesis and characterization and measurement techniques of reflectance and diffuse transmittance. In addition, he is the author of Reflectance Spectroscopy: A Guide to Reflectance Materials. He received his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from West Virginia University.

This book gives a very useful overview of spectroscopy that will allow the reader to learn methods for doing things in other spectroscopic areas that could be potentially applied to his own. Use to read aloud to your friends with kids

Too short! This small book is a collection of Barry wit... one witticism per page. I can't picture it being worth the full price, even if you are a Dave Barry fan. However, I picked up mine for a buck even at B&N. At about a penny per comment, I felt there was balance in the universe.

Some Mildly Amusing Complaints about the Generation Gap

Every generation complains about the next generation. In this book, syndicated humorist Dave Barry levels his pen at his son, Rob, during the time from when Rob was 11 through senior year in high school. "Parenthood is not unlike the Space Mountain ride at Disney World . . . ." It has its ups and downs and its unexpected moments. The book continues in that vein.
The gags are highly concentrated into Rob's difficulties with getting out of bed in the morning, loud music (that's the title reference), driving, vacations, ski trips, projects, science fair preparations, help with school work, becoming interested in girls, toys, video games, television, sneakers, clothes, and expenses. Rather than being grouped in some logical order, they just sort of show up randomly. To me, much of the humor depends on being Dave Barry, being there, or seeing an image of the situation. Cartoons would have helped. As it was, I found the book light, but never really did start to laugh.
Rob comes across as a normal, healthy young man making fine progress in growing up. Most would take delight in having such a son.
I think the humor would have been improved if it had been aimed more powerfully at Mr. Barry. He does point out his own limitations (with school work, in skiing down slopes, and in keeping up with the newest trends), but the put-downs are mostly aimed at Rob. As such, I often found them to sound like whining rather than humor. For example, the reason that adults have sexual relations not very often is because children discover they need help with projects after 11:00 at night. Okay, that may have happened once in a while . . . but I think that the point would have been funnier if it focused on the way that some teachers now assign homework projects that can only be done by having the student and two parents work for hours. There are often funny things that happen in those projects that could have provided humor.
The other direction Mr. Barry could have gone in would have required Rodney Dangerfield style one-liners. Mr. Barry's style lends itself to that approach, but his writing isn't quite terse enough to pull it off.
If you are frustrated with your son, this book can do you some good by helping you realize that what's going on is normal. If you are looking for a good humor book, I'd look elsewhere.
In the meantime, you can have a few laughs if you think about how your father would have described you when you were a teenager (using humorous concepts). That perspective may help you be more understanding with your teenager.

Patchwork, unconnected snippets

I'm a big Dave Barry fan, but this "book" (more like a sampler than a book) seems like the brainchild of a publisher trying to milk an author's fame for all it's worth, at the expense of the author's reputation. These essays aren't the usual complete newspaper-column length essays you normally get in a Dave Barry book. Each page is a paragraph or two snippet that feels like it was cut out from a regular essay. They all feel incomplete and patched together. I bought this as a Kindle book and, honestly, wondered if there had been a problem with the download at first. (What happened to the rest of the story?).

Don't waste your money. Buy a real Dave Barry book.

As in the first five entries in this popular Regency series, the plotting is lushly tangled and rich in romance (Lady Jane, who's run away from home to avoid an arranged marriage, is forced to choose between a stable but boring Englishman and an unpredictable but dashing French count). Though her language sometimes shifts disconcertingly from the formal, even antique ("she preferred to stay wrapped in dull numb misery that would make what she had to do the easier") to the colloquial and modern (one character "put the pistol in his mouth and blew his brains out"), Chesney delivers a pleasurable farewell to a memorable cast of heartwarming characters.

Final story in the "Poor Relation" series... GREAT !

Marion Chesney continues to delight most with her unusual romp into the strangest arenas! Where does she find her inspiration? REMARKABLE! This final episode is typically full of surprises and hidden romance. Almost driven to suicide by her cruel father, horrid governess and an old geezer suitor, she's saved by the owners of the "Poor Relation Hotel". They take her under their wings and come up with a crazy idea to bring her out for the Season, as a country miss, right under her awful father's nose! She trys to fall in love; misses, but proceeds to save the life of the handsome but naughty Comte de Mornay. This is the craziest of the Poor Relation series, and extremely excellent!

Book 6, Conclusion of Poor Relations Series

Excellent wrap up of a very fun series. A distraught Lady Jane comes to the Poor Relations Hotel and is taken up by the Oldsters. A supposedly frivolous French Comte and his Scottish friend soon become involved. Regency spying and attempts at assassinations are in the air. And of course Love.

More attention was placed on the problems of the Comte and Lady Jane, leaving the Poor Relations a bit in the background although they were strong at the very satisfactory ending. I truly enjoyed the entire series, and this was a very suitable ending.
