Never Haunt a Historian: Volume 7 (Leigh Koslow Mystery Series), by Edie Claire

Seventh in the USA-Today and Kindle Top Ten bestselling Leigh Koslow Mystery Series!

A hidden secret…
A ghost to keep it that way.

Leigh Koslow doesn’t care who claims to see the specter of a Civil War soldier skulking around her neighbor’s farm; she does NOT believe in ghosts. Never mind that the farm in question was settled by a veteran of the Battle of Gettysburg, and never mind that its occupants have complained of floating lights, shadowy figures, and poltergeist-style vandalism for a solid half century. When her amiable neighbor Archie Pratt, beloved captain of a local unit of reenactors, vanishes from the farmhouse without a trace, Leigh is certain there is a rational explanation. She is also certain there is a rational explanation for the bizarre refilled holes that keep appearing all over her neighborhood, and that neither has anything whatsoever to do with the farm’s chilling history of curses, insanity, and murder.

She can only hope. Because when her children discover an aged map of the neighborhood that seems to point to hidden treasure, the local Civil War buffs think otherwise. Did Union private Theodore Carr leave Cemetery Hill in 1863 with a little… souvenir? Only one thing is for sure: someone thinks he did. And as intrigue escalates to violence within feet of her own backyard, Leigh determines to figure out whom… before any more hastily dug holes turn into unmarked graves!

A Treasure of a Mystery
By AcerAcer
I picked up the first ebook in the Leigh Koslow Mystery Series in July of 2011 because it was free at the time. Well, it turns out it is still being offered for free, and should you have just stumbled across "Never Haunt a Historian" without having read any of the earlier books, I suggest you pick up the first one posthaste! Never Buried (Leigh Koslow Mystery Series, Book 1) It's a joy.

Little did I know how much I was going to come to love the series. I ended up buying all five books, one right after the other. (In fact, I'm not sure I even waited until I finished one to buy the next in line.) I didn't know it at the time, but the series was nearing the end of a 10-year hiatus between Book 5 and Book 6. And I was very lucky to come across the series when I did, because I didn't have to wait long at all for that sixth book to come out; less than a year, in fact.

And now here I am reviewing the eagerly-awaited seventh book. I enjoyed "Never Haunt A Historian" very much, with the exception of the very slow start. Finding out that an elderly neighbor appears to be missing, Leigh walks over to his house to make sure he's not actually home but ill and unable to call out for help. Or, heaven forbid, dead. However, on the way there, she spends an enormous amount of time going back and forth about the situation in her mind, and by the time she gets there she has apparently talked herself out of getting involved. So she just collects the man's mail (a suspicious amount if the man is actually home) and is going to leave it on the porch. She rings the doorbell and decides with relief that no one is home (even though the truck is in the driveway) and considers leaving right then. If she were really going there to make sure he was all right, that makes no sense. But then she finds out the door is unlocked, the TV is on, and the coffee in the coffeemaker has boiled down to nothing! That gets her involved for sure. So, she spends essentially the entire chapter talking herself into the wellness check, then out of it and then back into it again.

If you should find that a bit dragged out, keep reading! The rest of the book is a fun, briskly-paced mystery. There's a treasure map and a search for a buried souvenir from the Civil War era. Someone wants it badly enough to assault anyone standing in the way. Everyone in the neighborhood gets in on the treasure hunt. There's a nice mixture of young, adult and elderly people so that the book isn't all geared towards readers of one age. Everyone gets to contribute to the solution; the kids, the parents, the grandparents. It's a very family-friendly story. But if you're hoping for a murder, sorry! No murders!

This is the one that should have been free in the series.

I have read all of the Leigh Koslow books and this is the only one that really disappointed me. Apparently when Leigh had her children she underwent a radical personality change. She isn't the same feisty woman that readers of the series fell in love with now. She is almost timid and has become a worrywart. The author is so enchanted with the name that she came up with to call Leigh and Cara's children by, 'The Pack', that she uses it ad nauseum. Let me just put it to you this way, if Leigh became obsessed with cleaning, then she will have become her mother. I hope that when the author is writing book 8 of the series, she gives us back the old Leigh Koslow that made us love the series to begin with.
