"I DO NOT THINK I WANT TO BE MARRIED AT ALL. I WANT TO BE RICH. VERY RICH…"
Miss Henrietta Bascombe's closest of chums gasped to hear of such a well-bred lady talk of going into trade, but Henrietta was determined to turn her pittance of an inheritance into a fortune by opening a London sweet shop that would rival the famous Gunther's! Undaunted by a challenge, Henrietta proceeded to hang out the traditional confectioners sign of a golden pineapple and soon earned the custom of the entire haute ton. That is, until the proud Earl of Carrisdowne took exception to his younger brother and his best friend ogling the girls behind Bascombe's counter. It was clear to the earl that Miss Bascombe would have to be put out of business and soon. But the earl looked forward to tangling with the fiery-eyed proprietor much more than he was willing to admit.
ABOUT THE SERIES
Determined heroines run the gamut from those who set out by running a confectioners sweet shop to others who are willing to disguise themselves as boys to get by and do what they have to do. Whatever the matter, the Regency series brings us heroines of style, grace, and determination - women who are not afraid to use their smarts to seek the stature or standing they feel they need. They may come from humble beginnings (or not, depending) but what these heroines share is a determination unmatched that leaves us turning page after page as we follow them in their dance.

Soon, she and her beautiful partners are in business, working day and night to make lovely pastries, etc, to entice the passersby to patronize her shop. Another golden tale from BEATON.
By Amanda S.
The puzzle is how BEATON can write so many tales and still make them all interesting. I've quit other authors for recycling characters, but M. C. BEATON is simply magic with her characters

Loved this Book - Another Book that Made me Smile and Laugh
By Judge Tabor
I am loving these books by M.C. Beaton. In this second book of The Love and Temptation series, we have a story about Miss Henrietta Bascombe and her live-in companion, Miss Hissop, who live in genteel poverty. The extremes they go to in order to get by and keep their pride, involves buying two day old bread, not having light or fire until it's absolutely necessary for life, circumstances which conspire to eventually get the best of Henrietta's thinking as to the benefits of remaining "genteel." As for Miss Hissop - her one goal in life is to not be laid to rest in a pauper's grave and therefore, she keeps a funeral closet - contents of which include a tin box for every shilling she can spare, along with black arm bands for the potential mourners and a long list of instructions for her funeral service.
When Henrietta receives an unexpected inheritance of 5,000 pounds, she decides she prefers going into trade, rather than continuing to live her life worrying about where the next meal, candles, fire, clothes will come from. To this end, she decides to use her inheritance and skill as a confectioner to open a shop in London. She knows that the best confectioners use attractive women to draw customers to their shops, so she chooses two women she knows are in desperate situations who might choose to join with her and Miss Hissop in their future business plans. Charlotte is a widow who continually lives on the edge of starvation and Josephine, although a squire's daughter and not without the comforts of life, is unfortunately used by her drunken father as a punching bag.
At first, Henrietta's friends, including Miss Hissop, are shocked that she would ask them to go into trade, but another fist to Josephine's face and another night of hunger and shivering from the cold in Charlotte's case, changes both their minds. Miss Hissop has no choice but to tag along and attempt to be the conscience and social protector of the group. They set up in London's West End and name their confectioner's shop Bascombe's, hanging out a "golden pineapple" sign, which was the traditional confectioner's way of advertising their type of business.
When they arrive in London, they attract some attention, but very soon, they make an unexpected adversary in the person of Rupert, the Earl of Carrisdowne. It seems he has a strong desire to keep his friend, Guy Clifford, and his younger brother, Charles away from Bascombe's, due to their attractions to Josephine and Charlotte. He's fearful they will wind up marrying these formerly genteel ladies, who are now beyond the pale of society. When Carrisdowne's plans not only fail, but work against him, in part due to assistance from none other than Beau Brummell, Carrisdowne decides upon a new plan. He will cause Henrietta to fall in love with him, this will cause her to give her shop less attention and the result will be the downfall of Bascombe's.
But of course Carrisdowne never considers the fact, he will be the one falling head over heels in love. Problems crop up in the form of a woman who wants Carrisdowne for her own, and in the person of Esau - the young man who Henrietta removed from the workhouse - and who fears that any marriage between Henrietta and Carrisdowne will result in his return to the workhouse. Eventually, these issues contribute to a gigantic falling out between Henrietta and Carrisdowne, resulting in the ladies having to secretly remove their business to Bath, leaving behind their dreams and hopes of love and marriage.
It's really enjoyable reading about Carrisdowne's depressed state and the temporary worry he goes through as he considers where Henrietta has disappeared to - yes, he acted like a jerk. But of course it's not a long period of time and we just want to be sure he gets his comeuppance, because surely he deserves it. There were so many funny spots in this story I laughed my head off. The eventual coming together of Carrisdowne and his Henrietta was super sweet.
